American College of Lifestyle Medicine 2014

October, 2014:  I attended the 3rd Annual conference of The American College of Lifestyle Medicine in San Diego.  There is a movement coming, everyone, that will propel Healthcare, Fitness, Nutrition, Functional Exercise and Health Coaching into the spotlight.

At Leaps & Bounds Personal Training & Clinical Exercise Inc., we’ve always worked hard to provide sound, solid, safe and effective Personal Training and also “Functional Exercise” programs for people who wish to live their lives (read: Lifestyle) in the manner that gives them access to the things that are most valuable to them:  Travelling; Living independently for as long as they’d like to; Enjoying their athletic pursuits no matter what their age;  Making the most of their relationships with family members and friends through their lifespan; Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight and muscle mass; Eating well and preparing their own meals to remain disease-free and medication-freewhenever possible and to maintain their good health forever.

Everyone has their own goals and dreams.  We need to be strong, healthy, fit and functional to be able to pursue and embrace them. Nutrition is another huge component of a healthy Lifestyle. At Leaps & Bounds Personal Training & Clinical Exercise, Inc. we’re now able to provide Interactive Healthy Cooking classes to our friends and clients. The  #LifeMed2014 Conference taught us how to enjoy Plant-based, Whole-food (un-processed) meals and snacks.  And they certainly put their “money where their mouth is”!  We enjoyed colourful, satisfying Breakfasts, Lunches (WOW – you should have seen and tasted those lunches!) and even a Vegan dinner at the closing presentation with Dr. Joel Fuhrman.

I’m enrolled in a program beginning January 12, 2015, that will enable me to become a credentialed, professional Chef  by April, 2015.   I’ll be adding this new skill to my services as a Health Coach and will be providing Personal Cooking lessons to our clients, to Corporate clients and to  members of our beautiful community.  We’ve already presented 2 classes in a local teaching kitchen  that were sold out.  The Executive Chef that we hired did a wonderful job and the food was delicious and the clients learned plenty of cool things they could apply to their own personal meal preparation plans.  But this is just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Or should I say that our “appetites have been stirred”?  We will be connecting you with local producers of fresh, wholesome produce, grains and beans.  If you choose to use meat, poultry and fish in your diet, we’ll have all the information you need to make the best choices for your health and for our environment and to find the best local sources.

I’m very excited to see that the American College of Lifestyle Medicine is embracing this Lifestyle movement among their Health Practitioners and Physicians.  And I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that some of our local White Rock Doctors (you’ll hear their names from me in another post very soon) are hoping to collaborate with Leaps & Bounds Personal Training & Clinical Exercise Inc. and our clients in developing healthy lifestyle programs that include Education in healthy eating, goal setting, behaviour change, lifestyle strategies that are important to them, and, of course – Exercise program development specific to their own personal lifestyle goals.
